Natural Gas vs. Liquid Propane: Understanding the Differences and Choosing the Right Fit

When planning a gas appliance installation — whether it’s a fireplace, outdoor kitchen, pool heater, or fire pit — one of the most important early decisions is whether to use natural gas or liquid propane. While both fuels are safe and efficient, they differ in key ways that can impact performance, safety, and suitability depending on your location and usage needs.
Natural gas is lighter than air, which means it rises and disperses quickly if a leak occurs. This makes it a safer option in enclosed or semi-enclosed environments. It’s also a bit cleaner than propane in terms of carbon emissions, producing less carbon dioxide per unit of energy. Natural gas is typically delivered through utility lines and is often billed in therms, which is a standard unit of heat equal to 100,000 BTUs. On average, natural gas provides about 103,000 BTUs per therm, depending on local gas composition. If your home has access to municipal gas service, natural gas is typically the most cost-effective and maintenance-free option — especially for year-round use.
Propane, in contrast, is heavier than air and will settle in low areas if it leaks, making proper ventilation and smart tank placement especially important. While it produces slightly more carbon output per unit than natural gas, it also contains more energy per unit. Propane delivers about 91,500 BTUs per gallon, meaning it packs more heat per gallon than natural gas delivers per therm — but it’s stored on-site in tanks rather than delivered through a pipeline. Propane is the preferred option in rural areas where natural gas infrastructure doesn’t exist, and it’s ideal for off-grid or seasonal appliances like pool heaters and outdoor kitchens.
If you’re in a suburban or urban neighborhood with existing utility infrastructure, natural gas is likely your best option due to convenience and steady supply. But if you live in a rural setting or want greater control over your fuel source, propane remains a flexible and powerful choice. Your location often determines what’s available — but the quality of your gas contractor determines how safely and efficiently your system performs.
